FedCon 32 | Vortrag | Diskriminierung bei Orville

Bullying and discrimination are often a central theme in “The Orville”.

Because each of us has certainly had direct or indirect experience of discrimination and/or bullying. Just like Orville maker Seth MacFarlane, who has openly admitted that he was bullied at school. And so it’s no wonder that with “The Orville” he shows us that a successful sci-fi series can offer much more than just light entertainment.

Behind the entertaining façade of the series, the viewer is often held up to a socially critical mirror. Current issues such as discrimination, gender stereotyping and the use of social media are not only openly addressed but also deliberately exaggerated. “The Orville” not only aims to entertain, but also to encourage viewers to reflect on their own prejudices and behaviour. Using selected episodes, we explain how The Orville presents controversial topics and discuss whether the makers also succeed in offering an approach to solving the problems.

Lecturer: Marion Müller, Frank Müller
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german

At MagicCon we, Marion and Frank, are known as the GOT/HOTD experts, but we met 20 years ago in a Star Wars costume club. Our passion for making costumes from our favourite films and series has stayed with us all these years. Together we have presented characters from Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Captain Future, Spaceballs, Starship Troopers, Terminator, Castle and, since last year, "The Orville" at FedCon. We share a love of sci-fi series/films with "The Orville" creator Seth McFarlane and have been fans of the series since it first aired. We met members of the crew, visited the filming locations in California and were able to use our knowledge of costume making to recreate the series' "gala uniforms" in detail.

In our lectures, we would like to take you on a journey to the Orville and take a look behind the often comedic façade of the series, which is thought-provoking with socio-critical themes.
