“You only do good business if you know about your clientele.” (Quark / season 2, episode 14).
In his bar, Quark welcomes alien cultures from the Gamma Quadrant, serves members of Starfleet, the Federation, and civilian guests from the Alpha Quadrant. His clientele consists of a colorful mix of different species and cultures. Quark continually demonstrates his interspecies or intercultural competence in his bar and knows what his customers want or think they need. Service is a top priority here in order to satisfy the wishes of the guests and, incidentally, to fill Quark’s cash register.
How does intercultural communication work in the Star Trek universe and what can it mean in our everyday life? We will discuss these and other questions under the motto Welcome to Quark’s with the help of many examples in this interactive lecture.
