FedCon 30 | Vortrag |Willkommen im Quarks | Gisela Zimmermann

Interspecialty service offerings as intercultural communication.

“You only do good business if you know about your clientele.” (Quark / season 2, episode 14).

In his bar, Quark welcomes alien cultures from the Gamma Quadrant, serves members of Starfleet, the Federation, and civilian guests from the Alpha Quadrant. His clientele consists of a colorful mix of different species and cultures. Quark continually demonstrates his interspecies or intercultural competence in his bar and knows what his customers want or think they need. Service is a top priority here in order to satisfy the wishes of the guests and, incidentally, to fill Quark’s cash register.

How does intercultural communication work in the Star Trek universe and what can it mean in our everyday life? We will discuss these and other questions under the motto Welcome to Quark’s with the help of many examples in this interactive lecture.

Lecturer: Gisela Zimmermann
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german
Gisela Zimmermann is a science fiction-loving scientist interested in intercultural communication and digital culture research. She also likes to use examples from Star Trek to illustrate complex topics.

She studied Popular Cultures and Religious Studies at the University of Zurich. She is currently working as a research assistant at the research college "Neues Reisen – Neue Medien" and in her research project she asks how pilgrims integrate, experience and evaluate mobile technologies and social media in their pilgrimage. She lives in Zurich and, as a border crosser, is herself part of intercultural communication.
