FedCon 32 | Vortrag | Planetarien = Holodecks?

Many people think: you go to a planetarium to see the stars. But what you can experience in planetariums has changed fundamentally in the last 10 years or so: In addition to an artificial starry sky, 360° video technology has made it possible to experience virtual flights into space, art projects or even the visualisation of current scientific data, among other things, and not just in the field of astronomy.

In fact, there are now more similarities with a holodeck than with the “stellar cartography” that you might first think of. The lecture will therefore compare and explain what holodecks make possible in Star Trek and what you can already do in a planetarium (or science centre) today. The central concept here is one that we encounter in various ways when reading, watching films or in a planetarium – and which hardly anyone knows, although everyone has certainly experienced it at some point: Immersion.

Lecturer: Monika Staesche
Duration: 60 min  -  The Lecture will be held in: german

Dr Monika Staesche is Director of the Planetarium and Observatory at the Insulaner in Berlin and Deputy Director of the Planetarium Berlin Foundation - and in the fortunate position of being able to turn her hobby, which she has pursued since the age of twelve, into a career in 2008, after 25 years of working in planetariums and observatories both in front of and behind the scenes.

Her favourite series from the Star Trek franchise is (unmistakably and still) Deep Space Nine. This may also be because Monika has been active in the Starfleet Universe chat role-playing game for over 20 years, where she develops her own characters and stories and therefore finds "greyscale characters" interesting.

As part of her professional activities, she has also recently joined the podcasters with "Einschlafen mit Weltall" (https://www.planetarium.berlin/podcast-einschlafen-mit-weltall).
