FedCon 31 | Vortrag | Pflanzen in Star Trek | Sabrina Halbritter

Plants in Star Trek? Yes, they exist – and they play a leading role from the first episode of The Original Series on! In my lecture, we will travel to places where no botanist has ever been: I will start with TOS, of course, where the focus was still on presenting (unfortunately still artificial) plants as futuristic looking as possible. We travel on to TNG/DS9/VOY and look at the leap to real plants: living plants vs. static space station, recurring plants and their meaning, using plants to create a coherent set and much more. The future awaits us in DIS and PIC: orchids are a major motif in the first Picard season, and there are good reasons for that, as well as the naming of the planet Nepenthe. Discovery, on the other hand, shows us how not only the series itself, but also the plants used have been modernized. Of course, I will accompany the lecture with screenshots from the series or small scenes with thematic relevance.

In a subsequent excursus, I will look at the topic of botany in The Expanse and venture a leap into fantasy, because living greenery also has far more than a supporting role in Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Co.

In short, it’s a topic that not many Trekkies have tackled yet, but it certainly sheds new light on the episodes for all fans.
