ESA Panel – Human Spaceflight: How to be an Astronaut and make Replicators in LEO, Lunar and Beyond!
Join Andrea Boyd and Aidan Cowley from ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany for a journey into orbit and beyond with the astronauts of the European Space Agency. These engineers are responsible not just for the flight of Europeans into space today but also preparation for our next steps to the Moon and beyond.
During this talk you’ll learn about how to be an astronaut and what it’s really like to live and work in space, as well as some of the exciting challenges (and solutions!) that lie ahead of us as we try and take humanity (and Europe) beyond our planet to explore the Solar System!

Andrea Boyd works at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany as a Flight Controller for the International Space Station. She studied Mechatronic Engineering at The University of Adelaide and specialised in robotics in South Korea. She worked for many years in Automation and underground Mining in the remote desert then joined the International Space Station Flight Control Team twelve years ago, certified as a Flight Operations Engineer for payload control, biomedical and crew operations.
Andrea’s projects together with the ISS have included spacefood, augmented reality, medical diagnostics, underwater astronaut missions in (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) and supporting rocket launches and landings from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan and Cape Canaveral, USA.
Dr. Aidan Cowley
Dr. Aidan Cowley received his B.Sc in Computer Applications and M.Eng in Electronic Systems from Dublin City University, Ireland, in 2004 and 2005 respectively, and a Ph.D in 2011. Subsequently he went on to work as a researcher and lecturer at the National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology (NCPST), Dublin City University, Ireland. There, his research activities included novel optoelectronic materials, thermoelectrics, plasma deposition and metrology as well as renewable energy systems.
In 2014, Dr. Cowley joined the European Space Agency as a Research Fellow, stationed at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, and in 2017 became a Science Advisor there, working as part of the Exploration Preparation, Research and Technology (ExPeRT) team. As part of this work, he is conducting research into disruptive and enabling technologies for human spaceflight such as in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), additive manufacturing and VR/AR capabilities.
