19. January 2020Jules Verne (1828 -1905) is the inventor of the scientific novel and proto-science fiction. He lived and wrote at a time when groundbreaking technical and scientific inventions were being made and our modern natural sciences were emerging. He enthusiastically embraced these technologies and findings and continued to stretch the thread further into the fictional. His heroes ventured into the oceans, air and space and under the earth. Verne’s numerous novels contain a great deal of specialist knowledge, embedded in exciting adventures.
This lecture Jules Verne and marine research presents Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and its scientific significance.
For this purpose Verne invented the first submersible in science fiction and created the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Nemo has created a perfect, sustainable art world under the sea, even harvesting his cigars underwater.
